[!Bible]- Mark 14:32-42 - ESV 32. And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33. And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34. And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” 35. And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37. And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38. Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39. And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40. And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him. 41. And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Verse 32-36

The last time that Peter, James, and John was at the transfiguration.

Christ is fully God and fully human, there are times we read and can sometimes see when he is God and see when he is human. Here we see the magnitude of the weight of what is about to happen to his human self.

[!Bible]- Luke 22:44 - ESV 44. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

34

Could take this literally!

He was becoming a curse for us!

[!Bible]- Galatians 3:13 - ESV 13. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us — for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree” —

36

Abba: What a child will call a father.

Remove this cup. Could be asking if there is another way to not be separated from the Father. Not necessarily a way without suffering.

He is having to take all of our sins and experience the full wrath of God for having sin.

37-40

Luke says that they were sleeping from being sorrowful. They just had Passover, then told he would be betrayed, then when they go pray they can hear Christ praying and crying out in agony. This was a lot to take in.

The suffering of Christ is a standard test of our suffering.

[!Bible]- Philippians 3:8-10 - ESV 8. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9. and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith — 10. that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

Many times in out prayers we ask that God remove our suffering. That isn't bad within itself but needs to also be said with "not my will but yours be done", and be content with the suffering that we are experiencing.

What was the temptation? We don't know but what is certain is that it needs to be meet with prayer.

40-42

He was not shy about what was to come when the time came.

Communion:

[!Bible]- Mark 14:22-24 - ESV 22. And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23. And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24. And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
